Short answer. For the turnover a deposit bonus forces you to make, rakeback pays far less in absolute money but costs nothing and locks nothing. A $100 bonus at 40× requires $4,000 of play and costs about $160 in expected losses on a 96% slot, so its expected value is −$60, under a max bet and a deadline. Rakeback on the same $4,000 is $5.60 at Stake (3.5% of the edge), $8 at Shuffle or Rollbit (5%), up to $20 at Duelbits (12.5%) and $16 at Cloudbet's welcome rate (10%), paid in cash whether you win or lose. A deposit bonus beats rakeback only when its EV is positive, which needs RTP above the break-even level (97.1% at 35×, 97.5% at 40×, 98% at 50×) and no cashout cap.
Same turnover, two structures
| 100% deposit bonus, $100, 40× bonus-only | Rakeback at 5% of house edge | |
|---|---|---|
| Turnover | forced: $4,000 | your choice; say $4,000 |
| Expected loss at 96% | $160 | $160 (the same play) |
| Reward | $100 bonus | $8 cash |
| Net EV of the reward | −$60 | +$8 |
| Conditions | max bet, expiry, contribution, cashout cap, no withdrawal until done | none; paid on claim |
| Variance of the reward | high: you often bust before clearing | none |
| If you stop early | bonus and winnings forfeited | keep everything earned |
The bonus's $100 is larger than the rakeback's $8, which is why it looks better. The expected cost of reaching it is larger still.
When the deposit bonus wins
- The multiplier is low and the base is the bonus (35× in our set) and you can play a game above the break-even RTP at 100% contribution.
- You were going to wager the required turnover anyway in the window allowed.
- There is no cashout cap and the max bet does not force you below your normal stake.
In our verified data the first condition is rarely met: casinos cut contribution on high-RTP games (Cloudbet 10% above 99.5% RTP) or exclude them.
When rakeback wins
- Any time the bonus EV is negative, which is most of the time at 35–50×.
- When you play tables or live games, where bonus contribution is 0–20% but rakeback (at Shuffle, Stake, Rollbit, Duelbits, Cloudbet) still applies to the house edge of those games.
- When you want to withdraw at will.
Why the market split
The crypto-first brands we track publish no deposit match at all (Stake, Roobet, Rollbit, Shuffle, Cloudbet, Duelbits); their welcome offers are rakeback boosts or cash packages. The 1x-platform brands (22Bet, Megapari, Betwinner, Melbet, Mostbet, 1win) and the classic Curaçao brands (BitStarz, Pin-Up) keep the multi-deposit match. Roobet's policy makes the trade-off explicit: no rakeback while a deposit-bonus requirement is active. Cloudbet pauses loyalty rewards during bonus play. You generally do not get both.
